Answers List:

Q.
What is the first step in establishing a successful online store?

A.
The first step in establishing a successful online store is in the selection of the domain name. The domain name will be your own private Web address (also called a URL). Because no two parties can have the same Web address, your domain name will uniquely identify you to your customers. It will tell them who you are and how to find you on the Internet. Don’t ever underestimate the power of an intelligent domain name.

Q.
What do you recommend when searching for a domain name?

A.
Always keep in mind that your domain name is not only your Web address, it is also the core of your Internet identity-your online brand. Later on, you can use your domain name as part of your email address. We recommend that you take the following 3 tips into consideration when searching for a domain name.

1-Do not choose a long domain name. Make it easy to remember and fast to type in a browser. Allow the customer to catch it even when they just hear or see it once. One of the ways domains propagate is by hear saying.

2-Avoid confusion. A domain name should give a clear hint about what your website does. If you already have a business and you want to build an online store, try to use the name of your established business.

Q.
Once I decide what my domain name should be how do I proceed?

A.
Once you know the domain that best suits your identity, make sure that it is available and immediately reserve it. Don’t wait to be ready to go online. Domain name registration is a continuous race for good domain names. Since the registration of a domain name is inexpensive, it is not worth postponing thus taking the risk of someone else beating you to it.

Q.
Is one domain name enough or is it better to have more?

A.
This question is very relevant. We see many businesses register several variations of domain names for the same site. Some register the same domain name with different extensions, some register common misspellings to anticipate on customers mistakes, others register similar names just to prevent competitors from having them.

Q.
Where can I register a domain name?

A.
One of our partners, Pl4e provides domain name registration for very competitive prices. Use www.pl4e.com to check the availability of the domain name you have chosen. Type in the domain, select the extension or extensions you want and click “go”. If the domain name is available, you can proceed with the registration.

Q.
What does TLD refer to in a domain name?

A.
In a domain name, the letters after the dot that we know to be the domain extension are also called a top-level domain or TLD.

Q.
What are the most popular extensions for domain names?

A.
The top 3 domain name extensions are the “.com”, “.net”, and “.org” extensions. The “.com” extension -which stands for commercial, is the most common for online stores. The “.net” extension is also widely used where “.net” stands for network. As for the “.org” extension, even though it was initially intended for non-profit organizations, there is no restriction about registering such domains.

Q.
What are the other acceptable top-level domain names?

A.
7 new top-level domain names have been recently authorized by ICANN. The “.aero”, “.biz”, “.coop”, “.info”, “.museum”, “.name” and “.pro” top-level domain names are international top domains (non-country-specific).

Q.
What does ICANN stand for?

A.
ICANN is the acronym for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is the international board that controls the allocation of top-level domain names around the world.

Q.
Do you recommend country-level top domains?

A.
Most countries offer top-level domain names for registration. Such domains are sold for the public either directly, or associated with a sub-domain such as “.co”. Some popular examples include “.fr” (for France), “.jp” (for Japan) and “.co.uk” (for the united kingdom). These types of top-level domain name are highly reliable since they are usually under government authority. To be on the safe side, always keep in mind that some countries may have restricting conditions for the attribution of such domain names.

Q.
Is it true that the “.tv” top-level domain does not refer to television?

A.
The “.tv” extension is in fact a country-level top domain. It was originally created to be the top-level domain reserved for Tuvalu -a small island in the Pacific. The control over this top-level domain was later transferred to a private commercial company. Even though this TLD is very popular among televisions and other media oriented institutions, this was not originally meant to be. Such domains remain however subject to the conditions of the contract between the government in those countries and the exploiting company. Unfortunately, the agreement is rarely known to the public.

Q.
What are the acceptable characters for registering a domain name?

A.
All the alphanumeric characters a-z and 0-9 can be used in domain names in any possible combination. The only additional acceptable character for registering domain names is the hyphen (-). Note that a domain name cannot start or end with a hyphen. No other character or punctuation is acceptable.

Q.
Can a domain name be all numeric?

A.
Since the numerals 0-9 are acceptable characters for domain names in any position and any order, yes you can register an all-numeric domain name.

Q.
Starting with how many characters can we register a domain name?

A.
In most cases, if you can still find a 2-character name for a domain, it will be accepted. However some countries may have different rules when you register a country-level top domain.

Q.
How much will a domain cost with you partner Pl4e?

A.
Pl4e will charge you $10 per year and per domain name for the 3 top-level domain names “.com”, “.net” and “.org”. Prices may differ with some country-level TLD’s like the “.tv” which is currently charged $45 per year. You can of course check www.pl4e.com for more up-to-date prices. Other domain name registrars can charge you as much as $25 per year for the 3 top-level domain names.

Q.
What can I do if I find the domain name I wanted already registered?

A.
It is very common for third parties to register domain names with the intention of later selling them to the highest bidder. If the domain you want is already registered, try to see if it is possible for you to buy it from its current owner. You can find many brokers on the Internet that will do that for you. You may get a decent deal for a domain name that might do the difference. If the current owner gets too greedy, and if you or your company holds a trademark on that domain name, we recommend that you seek legal advice on that matter. If none of the above applies to your case, just look for an alternative domain name.

Q.
What if I register a wrong domain name, can I have my money back?

A.
It may happen that you misspell a domain name, register a wrong name, change your mind about a domain name or find a better domain after completing the registration. There is usually no refund policy regarding domain name registration. If you want to register another domain name, you have to pay again. Delete however the domain you registered by mistake or make sure that it is not automatically renewed. To be certain about the case that apply to you, you can check the terms and conditions of the registrar you are dealing with.

Q.
I registered more than one domain name, and I want all of them to point to the same site. Is this possible?

A.
Of course, your site may be reached via several domain names at the same time. This configuration can be easily done through your hosting control panel. You can do that yourself or you can ask your hosting provider to do it for you. Some hosting companies may charge you extra for that service, however if your hosting company is our partner www.webfacility.net this service is free of charge.

Q.
When I register a domain name, is it mine for life?

A.
The fees you pay for a domain name are annual fees. As long as you continue to renew and pay for your domain name it is safely yours. Some registrars, including our partner www.pl4e.com, allow you to register a domain name for several years in advance. This rule may not apply to some country-level top domain names.

Q.
What happens if more than one party tries to register the same domain name?

A.
When a domain name is purchased, it is automatically locked to prevent someone else from buying it. Even though the Whois database may not have been updated prior to the second registration attempt, there is no chance for a domain to be sold to two separate parties.

Q.
What is a product catalog?

A.
A product catalog is a collection of categories and items. You can define your categories to be linear (one level) by assigning no parent to those categories. On the other hand, by selecting a category to be the parent of another category, you can move instantly to a multi-level hierarchical catalog.

Q.
What is a product category?

A.
A product category is a collection of items. A given item can be assigned one or more categories. If no category is assigned to a given item, the item will act as a stand-alone category by itself.

Q.
What is a product?

A.
A product is the same as an item. Any item from the product catalog is itself a product. Items and products are used anywhere in this site to refer to the same entity.

Q.
What if I have two or more items that are somehow related?

A.
In the item management section, you can find a “see also” function that allows you to link related items. From the client site, you can navigate from one item to another that is related by using the associated “see also” button.

Q.
Do I have to refer to you when my catalog needs updates?

A.
Of course not. From the administration software supplied with the GoeShop you can update your product catalog yourself with no trouble at all. You are the manager of your own product catalog.

Q.
What are the operations that allow me to manage my product catalog?

A.
You can create new categories and products. You can modify or delete existing categories and products.

Q.
If I want to delete a category, do I need to delete all associated products first?

A.
Not at all. When you delete a category, you can ask the system to delete also automatically all associated products. On the other hand, you can ask the system to keep the products available for you to include later in other categories.

Q.
What are the ad keywords?

A.
Ad keywords are used to define which advertisements should appear in which pages. Ad keywords are used when defining ads as well as within the page editor. Therefore, pages will hold ads that have the same keyword as the one set for each page.

Q.
What are the operations that allow me to manage my ad keywords?

A.
You can create new ad keywords at will. You can modify or delete existing ad keywords when necessary.

Q.
How can I bring a new or promoted product to the attention of my customers?

A.
You can create an advertisement for that product and choose to display it on any number of pages of your site including the home page.

Q.
Do I need any skills to be able to create an advertisement for one of my products?

A.
Not at all. Just prepare the image of the ad in a way to fit in the area intended to it and use the advertisement engine from your site administration section to create the ad in few easy steps.

Q.
When my ad is no longer wanted how can I change or remove it?

A.
In addition to creating new ads, the advertisement manager allows you also to modify or delete an exiting ad.

Q.
How can I decide in which pages I want an ad to be displayed?

A.
Use the ad keywords created. Any number of keywords can be associated with each ad. The ad will be displayed in any page that has its own ad keyword included in the list of keywords associated with the ad in question in the advertisements manager.

Q.
How can I stop a given ad from being displayed without having to remove it?

A.
If you want to stop an ad from being displayed temporary, all you have to do is edit the ad from the administration section and uncheck all the ad keywords. This will prevent the ad from being displayed in any of the pages. To display the ad again, simply recheck the corresponding ad keywords.

Q.
Can I create an ad for other than my own products?

A.
You can create an ad for any service or product whether offered inside your site or not. If the ad you are creating should take the visitor to a different site when clicked, simply add the corresponding URL when you create or edit the ad in the advertisement manager.

Q.
How do I know if an ad is successful or not?

A.
Every ad you create has associated to it an exposure counter. This counter will show the number of times this ad was displayed on the site. If the ad is clickable (has a URL associated to it) it will have in addition to the exposure counter a click through counter. This click through counter will show the number of times this ad was clicked.

Q.
How can I give priority for an ad over another?

A.
Associated with each ad in the advertisement manager is a numerical attribute referred to by impressions. This attribute is used only when the number of ads you create for a given location exceeds the space available. The ads will rotate by giving higher exposure to ads with higher impressions value. The number of exposure is proportional to the values in the impressions attribute. To have all ads equally exposed, use the same value for all ads in the impressions attribute.

Q.
How long does it take to set up a new hosting account?

A.
The setup of a new hosting account is instantaneous. Once you select the plan that suits you better, you can subscribe online using www.webfacility.net, drop an email to our sales department or give us a call. However, if the hosted domain name is newly created or if it requires DNS change, you should allow 24 to 48 hours for the domain to propagate.

Q.
What do you mean by propagate?

A.
When you register a domain name, you associate to it a domain name server also called DNS. It needs some time for all the servers connected to the Internet to recognize that domain name and know exactly to what server you need to be connected. That time usually estimated to 24-48 hours is called the propagation time.

Q.
While the domain propagates, is there anything I can start with?

A.
If you are in a hurry to be online, we can provide you with an IP address. Since the hosting itself is instantly activated, you can start by uploading you site and configuring your email addresses using the server IP address instead of the domain name. Once the domain propagates, your site is ready for use.

Q.
Once I subscribe to a hosting plan, can I cancel my account?

A.
The hosting plans are all configured into monthly billing cycles. If you are subscribed to any hosting plan and wish to cancel your current subscription, you need to wait until the current active cycle or month to end. If you cancel before that, your account remains active until the end of the current month and will not be renewed after that. There is no refund for the month that is already billed.

Q.
If I am subscribed to a hosting plan, can I still change it?

A.
You can upgrade your hosting plan at any time in a blink. Just place your order online, drop us an email or call us. You will only be billed with the difference between the two plans. Of course, as you can upgrade a plan if more resources are needed, you can also downgrade a plan if fewer resources are enough.

Q.
When I upgrade my hosting plan, will my site be down for sometime?

A.
When you upgrade a hosting plan, there is usually no DNS change. Therefore the upgrade takes effect instantly with no downtime whatsoever. If the upgrade takes you to a different server where the DNS differ, you may experience some downtime. However with some settings fixed, we can reduce that downtime to its minimum.

Q.
Is email aliasing supported?

A.
Of course, all our plans have this feature enabled. You can forward or create aliases at will. You can also configure a catch-all email.

Q.
What is a catch-all email?

A.
A catch-all email is an email where the wild card "*" is set to be an alias for that email. All emails sent to anything@mydomain.com are caught by that email. Even though the catch-all feature makes sure that you do not loose any email, it however catches a lot of garbage emails.

Q.
Do you support POP3 mailboxes?

A.
Yes, all our hosting plans including the entry-level ones support POP3 mailboxes. Your incoming emails are safely stored for you to download.

Q.
Do you offer statistic information about web traffic?

A.
We have a very rich statistic report for you to use. Hits to your site are registered per date, hour, day-of-week, month and the sort. Hits are also recorded by operating system, server, search engine, country and the sort. Specific hits by page, unique visitor and duration of presence are also mentioned. All the above give you comprehensive statistics about your website traffic.

Q.
Is access to raw log files allowed?

A.
Yes, raw log files can be viewed from within the hosting control panel.

Q.
Is there a control panel that helps me administrate my hosting account?

A.
Of course, a password-protected control panel allows you to administrate your account. You can follow up with your invoices and statements, setup your email accounts and view your site statistics.

Q.
How do I upload my web pages?

A.
When you subscribe to a hosting plan, you are sent in your confirmation email the user name and password to access your FTP location. Any FTP software can be used to upload web pages to your site. If you are not familiar with such software, you can download from the net free ones such as WS_FTP.

Q.
Is it easy to use software like WS_FTP?

A.
You do not need any special skills to use WS_FTP. Create a profile for your site, name it, enter your domain name, use the user name and password we provided for your FTP access and connect. You can transfer files from the left side local folders to the right side remote site with a mouse click.

Q.
What is an IP address?

A.
An IP address is used to identify a computer on the Internet while a user is online. The IP address stands for Internet Protocol address. An IP address can be static or dynamic.

Q.
What is a static IP address?

A.
A static IP address remains the same every time a user connects to the Internet. The IP address is fixed and does not change from one session to the other. This is necessary when the computer is a server that host a website or offer any other type of server connection. The address should be static so that the server is found every time it is inquired. In addition to that, since a static IP does not require a login process, surfing the Internet is a lot easier.

Q.
Is it safe when a computer is accessed without a login process?

A.
True, the inconvenience of having a static IP is the security risks that this carry. However, adequate hardware and software firewalls can help build a secure environment. We strongly recommend a router or firewall to control and filter access to and from the Internet in the case of a static IP.

Q.
What is a Dynamic IP Address?

A.
A dynamic IP address is an IP that changes for every session. Every time you connect to the Internet you are assigned a different temporary address. If you use with your friends any Internet Phone Application, you need to provide them with your current IP for every session in order for them to connect. If your application or server requires a permanent IP address on the Internet, then the static IP address is the one you need.

Q.
What does the “bandwidth” represent on the Internet?

A.
Usually, when you buy a hosting plan, you are allocated a given amount of “bandwidth” per month. This bandwidth also called “traffic”, is the amount of data transfer that is involved with your site. The size of pages in kilobytes that your site visitors are viewing contributes to that traffic. Data transfer also take into consideration other factors. The amount of upload and download you perform using your FTP access is one of them. Another one is the size of emails that are broadcasted from and to your hosting account.

Q.
What happens if I exceed the allocated bandwidth?

A.
With every hosting plan you subscribe to a different amount of traffic is allowed. Usually, you should not bother too much about minor excess in bandwidth from one time to the other. However, if you exceed the allocated bandwith regularly and by a significant amount, you should consider upgrading your hosting plan to a higher level. If you feel the need for additional bandwith was only occasional, it is better for you to pay for the excess traffic when needed and keep your old plan unchanged.

Q.
What does aliasing mean when associated to emails?

A.
If you have several email accounts that you are regularly checking yourself, it is a good idea to benefit from the advantages that email aliasing (also called forwarding) can offer. You can choose any of the emails you are using whether provided by your ISP, your hosting plan or any other third party, and forward all incoming emails to that unique account. If you do so, you can log to that single email account and retrieve all awaiting emails in one action.

Suppose you purchase a domain name, subscribe to a hosting plan and create a website for your business. You may want to have visitors’ questions categorized by subject (information, sales and support). For that, you create 3 email aliases: info@yourdomain.com, sales@yourdomain.com and support@yourdomain.com and forward all incoming emails to the old email account provided by your ISP youremail@yourisp.com. Checking the emails for youremail@yourisp.com is enough for the account itself and the 3 above aliases. The complete process remains hidden to the senders.

Q.
What are the other advantages of aliasing?

A.
Regular full email accounts whether provided by your ISP or included in your hosting plan, cost money and are usually limited in number. Using email aliases can significantly increase the number of virtual emails you are using without affecting the overall cost and quota. In addition to that, email aliases cause less headeackes to administer. A single user name and password is enough to manage all accounts.

Q.
Is it better than to use email aliasing instead of full email accounts?

A.
Don’t jump to conclusions. Email aliasing has a lot of advantages over full emails in a specific situation. This is when a single person is administering and checking the emails for all created accounts. If in your company every email is handled by a separate person, it is definetly better to have separate full emails for each; even if this may cost more or consume faster your email quota.

Q.
What are the advantages for me of having a dedicated server?

A.
Shared hosting is a convenient way to start a website. It is very affordable and gives acceptable result for low to medium traffic websites. By the time your site becomes more and more successful, you may find yourself limited with the constraints of your hosting plan. This would be the right time for you to move to a dedicated server. A lot of advantages come with a dedicated server some of which are as follows: better performance, greater reliability, higher security, custom configuration, personalized firewall, fixed IP address and upgrade facility.

Q.
How is performance increased with a dedicated server?

A.
It is very simple, you have the whole server just for yourself. All the resources are dedicated to answer the requests of your site visitors. The processor, memory and disk space are completely and exclusively used to increase the performance.

Q.
Where do I gain greater reliability with a dedicated server?

A.
With a dedicated server, you are not at the mercy of another site crashing down. You are safe from the server being slowed down by heavy traffic generated by other sites. You are also not affected by third parties using the same server for spamming. In addition to the huge traffic it engender, spamming can be the reason for a server to be black listed.

Q.
How more secure can I feel with a dedicated server?

A.
Since you are the only one who has access to your dedicated server, you are at the highest possible degree of security.

Q.
Where do I benefiit from custom configuration and firewall?

A.
With a dedicated server, you can add the software that you need and remove any other software that is not necessary to the applications you are running. The configuration of the server can be customized to your own needs and requests. No conflict is possible with third party software and no third party requests can affect the smooth operation of your dedicated server. In addition to that, you can personalize the firewall you are running to enforce your own access control policy.

Q.
Do I get my own IP address with a dedicated server?

A.
While some hosting plans may sell you a fixed IP address, most shared hosting sites use the same IP address. With a dedicated server, you are sure to get your own unique IP address.

Q.
What if my dedicated server starts to be too small for me?

A.
Since the server is all yours, it is up to you to order any upgrade when necessary. Memory, hard drive and processors can be added or upgraded whenever you feel necessary. For dedicated server sample configuration, check our hosting partner website www.webfacility.net.

Q.
How important is the size of a web page?

A.
When you create a web page, you should consider keeping the download time as short as possible. Make sure your page is not too heavy with graphics that will slow down load time. Put yourself in the shoes of customers that shop from home with considerably modest Internet connections. A page should not exceed 8-10 seconds to download in its worst case. Many users will close any site and move to the next if a page takes too much time to load.

Q.
How important are the navigation menus for a site?

A.
The navigation menus are there to facilitate the life of the visitor. Make sure your customers can find their way in your site without much effort. When you build your site, try to keep in mind that the menus should introduce the content and not dominate it. Few clicks should be enough to accomplish a complete purchase operation starting from the home page. Keep the menu label or legend clear. The customers should know exactly were to click to get where they want without guessing.

Q.
Do you recommend fancy designs or do you like things simple?

A.
Graphics, animations and other visual effects are nice in an entertainment site. However in an e-commerce, simplicity is the rule. Use the same colors and fonts in all pages. Have your site branded and recognizable. Stick to what your customers are used to in your logo and brochures. The visuals should not distract your customers from the main goal which is selling your products. The text should be clear and concise and preferably black over white.

Q.

A.
When online transactions are in question, three elements are needed to inspire confidence and ensure security. Those key elements are encryption, authentication and digital certificates.

Q.
What is authentication?

Encryption is a necessary but not sufficient condition. Customers need to know that you are eligible of trust. This can be provided by what is known as authentication. The digital certificate of a website is its passport or credentials. It is an electronic file that uniquely identifies a site on the Internet.

Q.
Once my site is SSL secure, can I proceed with online payments?

Now that your site is secure and that customers can feel safe providing you with credit card information, you need to be able to process that information. Collecting information is only the first step to online payments. Verifying the validity of collected information and providing the necessary connectivity between customers, vendors and financial institutions are a must to a complete e-commerce solution. This process is known to be an Internet payment gateway.

Q.

A.
An acquiring bank is the entity that provides the Internet merchant account in the online payment processing world. The Internet merchant account is the account that you as an e-commerce operator need to open with an acquiring bank. This account allows you to accept online payments over the Internet. You as the merchant will have to pay a fee for each transaction processed. This fee can be fixed per transaction, a fraction of the transaction amount or a combination of both depending on the agreement you have with the acquiring bank in question.

Q.
What is a payment gateway?

Passwords can be changed regularly at will for additional security.

A.
The members of a website are its registered visitors. The visitor would have previously filled a submission form to become a member. The member will use them every time to log into the website and perform operations that anonymous visitors cannot do (like placing orders).

Q.
Does your shopping cart include a payment gateway?

A.
Yes of course, the site you get with GoeShop performs a complete shopping cycle by itself. Q.
How can I edit my pages if I know nothing about web design?

A.

Q.
What does DNS stand for?

A.
The DNS or Domain Naming System is a hierarchical method of naming computers on the Internet. A DNS server maintains a database of host names and IP addresses. Therefore, when a query is sent to a DNS server, it will resolve with an alphabetical host name instead of a numerical address. This alphabetical name is what you see in the address bar of your browser. The DNS server is also responsible for, or assists in distribution of, domain name zone file information, translating your domain name into an IP Address and specifying the mail server(s) responsible for email distribution to your domain name.

Note: Registered domain names should reference at least two name servers: a primary name server and a secondary name server. The latter is used if the former is inaccessible for any reason.

Q.
What is the CVV?

A.
The CVV or Card Verification Value is used by banks and credit card companies as an anti-fraud measure. This measure is used to prevent payments from being accepted from fake credit cards. Since the CVV is a random value that is physically printed on the card, it is practically impossible to auto-generate.

Q.
Where can I find the Card Verification Value?

A.
On most credit cards, the CVV (Card Verification Value) can be found on the signature strip present at the back of the card. A 3-digit CVV follows the last digits of the card number that are reprinted in reverse italics. Among others, this is the case for credit cards such as the Visa Card, the MasterCard and the Dinners Club Card. For other cards such as the Amex Card, a 4-digit CVV is located on the front of the card and above the card number.

This particularity makes Yahoo unique in its class. It is known to be the website directory and not just another search engine. However to avoid becoming obsolete, Yahoo integrated the world of the search engines we know today by using Google’s crawler-based listings for its main results. In reality, what were behind the success of Ask Jeeves are about 100 editors who monitored search logs. They then located on the web what seemed to be the best sites to match the most popular queries. Today, the impact of human-provided answers is lesser even if around 10 editors still work for Ask Jeeves. The URL for Ask Jeeves is as follows: http://askjeeves.com.

Q.
How do traditional Search Engines sort listings?

A.
The criteria by which traditional search engines sort their search result listings constantly changes. As long as there are web designers that try to outsmart the search engines to have their websites frequently located and highly ranked, there are search engines that keep revising their computer programs in an attempt to better sort through the relevant sites. Basically, how things work is that the search engines have computer programs that crawl around the Internet trying to find any and every website in existence. When they come across a new website, they scan the contents of the site’s web pages. Then these contents are run through their sorting computer software to figure out where your website will appear in their various search results.
